Moroccan Police Chief: Social Media Exaggerates Crime, Actual Violent Offenses Down 5%

The Moroccan police warns against the abusive use of social networks, especially on security issues. The Director of the Judicial Police, through a press conference, called for the cessation of the publication of erroneous data presenting Morocco as a country where crime exceeds understanding.

Already 112 videos with illegal content detected on social networks. It was during a press conference that the Director of the Judicial Police, Mohamed Dkhisi, noted that this type of crime, related to homicides, beatings, violent assaults and armed robberies, decreased by 5.25% between the period of January and September 15 of this year compared to the same period last year.

The greatest responsibility in the field of insecurity comes from the videos disseminated on social networks and which show real crimes perpetrated on Moroccan territory, but also crimes committed abroad, presented as if they had occurred in Morocco.

Everything that is written and disseminated on social networks is subject to continuous and precise control at the technical and operational levels, and the people who publish such false information and videos that have nothing to do with Morocco are brought to justice, said Dkhisi.

The police official stated that drug use, particularly of ecstasy, was one of the main causes of violent crimes, and that the security services had seized 1,161,000 tablets of this type of drug, an increase of 91% compared to the whole of 2018.
