Moroccan Phosphate Giant OCP Maintains Global Market Dominance Amid Crisis

The Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), has not been disrupted by the health crisis shaking the planet. The group, which holds a third of the world market, remains the leader.

Fertilizers account for 80% of export turnover. "OCP is staying the course and focusing on high value-added products," reports L’Économiste, "convinced that the downward trend in world prices of phosphates and derivatives will certainly reverse in the short term, as one of the major lessons of the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic is food security, which is now at the top of priorities".

Pending such a scenario, the Office, to maintain its market share, is betting on volumes to the point of seeing its fertilizer shipments explode by more than 60%, or 2.9 million tons, in the first quarter. But as for phosphate exports, they only increased by 6.4%, or 2.2 million tons.

As for acid, the group maintains its world leadership, with a 49% market share, up 2%. Acid exports stood at 1.5 million tons over the first 9 months of 2019.

As for fertilizers, the Office’s market share has been maintained thanks to "the flexibility of its product and regional portfolio, in a context marked by a plethoric supply and declining demand in Asia". This did not prevent it from improving its fertilizer shipments.
