Moroccan Parliament Urges Action on Racist Attacks Against Expatriates
Sunday 3 March 2024, by
A parliamentarian from the Istiqlal party has just called on Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation, to act to combat the repeated racist attacks targeting Moroccans residing abroad (MREs).
The issue of racist violence against Moroccans living abroad is reaching Parliament. A deputy from the Istiqlal party has addressed a written question to the head of Moroccan diplomacy, Nasser Bourita. "Some members of the Moroccan community residing abroad suffer from racist harassment and aggression that sometimes reach a degree of violence going as far as beatings and injuries and, in the most extreme cases, murder, not to mention insults, slurs, humiliation and attacks on the dignity of individuals," writes the elected official.
To support his words, he cites the case of the MRE H.K. As he was leaving his workplace at four o’clock in the morning on February 17, this man from the province of Figuig was attacked with a knife by a group of three individuals in Leipzig, Germany. He emerged with a broken right leg. After the attack, he was admitted to the city hospital to receive care.
Faced with these recurring incidents against members of the Moroccan community residing abroad due to their ethnic, religious and linguistic affiliation, the deputy calls on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find effective solutions to meet these challenges and strengthen the rights of MREs to benefit from adequate protection and to guarantee their security and safety in the countries where they reside.
