Moroccan Opposition Party Proposes Cap on Top Civil Servant Salaries

The parliamentary group of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has tabled a bill to limit the salary and allowances of senior civil servants to 100,000 dirhams per month after deduction of income tax.
In making such a legislative proposal, the PJD deputies, now in the opposition, claim to be acting with the aim of easing the pressure on the state budget, rationalizing public spending and establishing equity among senior civil servants. They claim to be inspired by models already experimented with by countries such as France, Egypt and Greece.
However, this bill only concerns senior civil servants appointed by the government council and called upon to head strategic institutions.
This bill will have to be examined and accepted by the government, then go through the filter of parliament. The news has sparked comments from Internet users. Some wonder why it is after two terms at the head of the government that the PJD is concerned about capping the salaries and allowances of senior civil servants, when it knows that it does not have a majority that can help it pass such a proposal.
