Moroccan Official on Trial for Drunk Driving and Insulting Police

The trial of Naoufal Chabat, president of the rural commune of Brarha in the province of Taza, opens this Wednesday, December 8 before the court of first instance of Fès. Incarcerated, he is being prosecuted for "driving under the influence, refusing to comply, attempted flight and insulting public officials in the exercise of their duties".
Naoufal Chabat, the eldest son of the former Secretary General of the Istiqlal Party (PI) and current president of the commune of Brarha in the province of Taza, must answer for his actions before the courts. He had been arrested on Monday, November 29, 2021 after an incident with a traffic officer.
Accused of "having insulted a public official in the exercise of his duties, of public drunkenness and of driving under the influence", this lawyer by training had been placed in pre-trial detention on December 1 last at the local prison Bourkaiz, by the public prosecutor near the court of first instance of Fès.
In 2019, the Court of Cassation in Rabat had acquitted Naoufal Chabat of the charge of "electoral fraud", after his conviction at first instance to eight months in prison with a suspended sentence.
