Moroccan Official's Lavish Wedding Sparks Slavery Controversy and Public Outcry

The sumptuous wedding organized by the President of the House of Councillors, Naam Miyara, for his daughter, is raising fierce controversies. The fourth political figure in Morocco after the king, the head of government and the President of the House of Representatives, is accused of slavery.

Is Naam Miyara a supporter of slavery? Accusations of slavery are weighing on him after the video of the celebration of his daughter’s wedding was published on social media. In its statement, the Federation of Women’s Rights Leagues (FLDF) says it has "followed with great consternation the video widely circulated on social media and some media, where "slaves" were offered to the daughter of the President of the House of Councillors during her wedding." It firmly condemns this act, which it describes as monstrous if proven true. This act "brings Morocco, which has recently appointed a president to the Human Rights Council (Omar Zniber, editor’s note), back to the era of slavery and discrimination," and represents "an insult to human values and a flagrant violation of the principles of human rights, the country’s constitution and all international conventions ratified by Morocco," denounces the federation.

The FLDF calls for firm opposition to all remaining discriminatory practices that violate human rights and aim to reproduce the relationships between slaves and masters. It also demands the opening of a rapid and impartial investigation, and the immediate taking of measures against the persons involved in this crime. "This crime harms the image of Morocco, both nationally and internationally, and goes against the important progress made by Morocco and the major advances made in the field of human rights, and is in contradiction with the path towards modernity and progress to which the country aspires," it is noted.
