Moroccan Official Fired for Facebook Criticism After Deadly Flood Tragedy

For criticizing the Government of Saad-Eddine El Othmani on Facebook, following the tragedy of Ijoukak, which left 15 dead, the president of the Ait Ourir constituency was relieved of his duties by the Minister of the Interior.

Criticism, even the most constructive, is not welcome in Morocco. The president of the Ait Ourir constituency learned this the hard way after his publication on the social network, Facebook, about the tragedy in Al Haouz. Without mincing words, he blamed the government of Saad-Eddine El Othmani: "In the black night, thunder and storms, returning from a wedding, tragedy was their destiny. The torrents did not give them time to go home and sleep peacefully in their house... Gentlemen, Ministers of the accursed Government, may destiny punish you!"

The government’s reaction after this jab did not take long. The president of the Ait Ourir constituency was simply relieved of his duties, reports Barlamane.

Indeed, following the torrential rains that hit National Road No. 7, at kilometer point 230, at the level of the Touk Al Kheir douar, in the province of El Haouz, on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, a van disappeared in the landslide of a ravine on the mountainside. A tragedy that cost the lives of 12 women, two men and a child.
