Moroccan Official Barred from Travel Amid Corruption Probe in Marrakech

The former president of the Marrakech Regional Council, Ahmed Touizi, is prohibited from leaving the national territory due to his involvement in a case of embezzlement of public funds, forgery and use of forgery.
According to the daily Al Massae, the investigating judge in charge of financial crimes at the Marrakech Court of Appeal ordered this ban. It targets the PAM deputy and his cousin, Lahcen Touizi, former president of the rural commune of Ait Aourir, as well as several other leaders.
According to the same daily, the procedure was initiated on the basis of a complaint from the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Property, which accused them of embezzlement of public funds, forgery and use of forgery.
For several years, the association has identified numerous financial frauds and suspected cases of major corruption in the local management of the Marrakech-Safi region and the commune of Ait Aourir.
