Moroccan officers in Israel: the BlueBird drone factory in Morocco is confirmed
The project of an Israeli drone factory in Morocco is entering a concrete phase. Officers from the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) are currently being trained at the headquarters of the company BlueBird Aero Systems in Israel, confirming a technology transfer for the local production of a kamikaze drone.
The BlueBird company has confirmed that this training session "precedes the launch of the SPY-X program and the establishment of a production unit in Morocco". The factory will be run by Moroccan executives, under the supervision of Israeli engineers, as announced by the company’s CEO at the end of 2024. This strategic partnership is a realization of the military and security cooperation agreement signed between Morocco and Israel in November 2021.
A "kamikaze" drone with strategic capabilities
The SpyX, which the FAR will now produce, is a "kamikaze" (or "suicide") drone. This device has already been successfully tested in Morocco in the past, particularly during exercises north of Boujdour where it hit its targets, including an M60 tank and a radar vehicle, with "very high precision". Its acquisition is considered strategic as it fills a capability gap. With a range of 50 kilometers and a "very large explosive charge", it offers a greater reach than conventional artillery (20-25 km) without the range of long-range strategic systems.
The SpyX is described as "efficient and less expensive" than an anti-tank missile, with an estimated unit cost between $50,000 and $60,000. It is not designed for strikes at 1000 km, but to be "deployable on the ground with units already engaged". Experts note that its use against a radar vehicle, for example, could "blind an entire anti-aircraft defense battery".
