Moroccan Notary Sentenced to 6 Years for $800,000 Fraud Scheme in Agadir

The Court of First Instance in Agadir has just sentenced a notary to six years in prison for fraud and breach of trust. He will also have to pay a sum of 8 million dirhams representing the amount embezzled in this case.
According to the daily Al Akhbar, the notary was the subject of several complaints, including one from a municipality to whom he had tried to sell a plot of land that was the subject of a protective seizure in favor of a banking institution.
It was this case with the municipality located in the province of Chtouka Ait-Baha that unearthed many complaints incriminating the notary who, during the trial, escaped other charges such as non-execution of a notarial deed. The 8 million dirhams seized from his account opened with the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion are to be shared among all the plaintiffs.
Despite the court’s decision, elected officials from the municipality have decided to refer the matter to the Ministry of the Interior so that an investigation can be carried out into the reasons why such an important transaction was carried out under very confusing conditions. For them, beyond the convicted notary, the possible implications of the municipal agents must be clarified.
