Moroccan Migrants Stranded at Turkish-Greek Border as NGO Urges Government Action

The Moroccan authorities are called upon to intervene urgently and rescue the many Moroccan nationals stranded at the Turkish-Greek land borders, warns the Moroccan Forum for Democracy and Human Rights (FMDDH).

In a letter addressed to various Moroccan authorities, the FMDDH states that it "is following with concern the suffering of hundreds of Moroccans at the Turkish-Greek land borders", after Ankara’s decision to open its borders and allow migrants of all nationalities to reach Europe. The collective condemns and finds "dishonourable the abuses on asylum seekers and immigrants from Morocco and other countries, such as Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Central Asian countries, East African countries and others from Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria and Palestine, in violation of humanitarian norms, solidarity and human rights".

The forum hopes that the government will act diligently, in order to "repatriate Moroccan migrants to their country", thus "putting an end to the tragedy they are experiencing after the failure of their project to reach Europe irregularly through the Turkish-Greek border". An appeal has also been addressed to the presidents of the two Houses of the Moroccan Parliament in order to set up a mission capable of allowing them to see for themselves the situation their fellow citizens are experiencing.

Last week, in a video widely shared on social networks, we see Moroccan migrants of different age groups complaining about the "cruel treatment" they have suffered from the Greek authorities. They declare to have been "tortured" and "beaten".
