Moroccan Medical Students Protest, Demand Reforms as Government Offers Concessions

More than 10,000 medical students organized a march on Thursday, April 18, in Rabat, and threaten a blank year. The two supervising ministries are proposing a dozen measures to try to respond to their demands.

Despite the social conflicts shaking the faculties of medicine and pharmacy nationwide, the government spokesman, Mustapha Khalfi, is optimistic and hopes that the students will return to their faculties, following the decisions taken by the Ministries of National Education and Health, during the meeting of April 12.

Thus, the structures of hospital training will be rehabilitated and improved within the faculties of dentistry, through the provision of the necessary equipment for practical work and hospital internships.

On the other hand, and in response to the main request behind the boycott, private medical students will not be able to take the internship exam, according to the statements of the government spokesman, "The current status does not allow students enrolled in private medical faculties to participate in the internship exams organized by the faculties of medicine and pharmacy."

Several other measures have also been taken, such as the updating and improvement of the doctor of medicine, pharmacy and dentistry degree, the implementation of function allowances for 5th year pharmacy students, and compulsory health coverage for students of all public medical faculties.
