Moroccan Mayor Jailed for Bribery in Electricity Connection Scandal

The president of the commune of Ouled Aissa was sentenced to two years in prison, including 10 months firm, and a fine of 10,000 DH. This is the verdict handed down by the criminal court of first instance of Taroudant, on Monday, March 2, 2020.
The police had arrested, in late February, the president of the rural commune of Ouled Aissa, in the province of Taroudant, along with his vice-president, in the act of corruption. The two officials had received a bribe.
Their arrest followed a complaint, via the toll-free number, from a citizen residing in the same commune. According to the complainant, the two elected officials had demanded the sum of 2,000 dirhams to authorize him to connect his house to the public electricity network.
With the help of the victim, the police set a trap for the commune president and his deputy. This is how the two suspects were arrested in Taroudant in the act of corruption.
While the vice-president was released the next day for lack of evidence of his complicity, the president of the commune of Ouled Aissa continued to face justice until he was sentenced to two years in prison, including 10 months firm, and a fine of 10,000 DH.
