Moroccan Math Prodigies Shine at Global Olympiad, Clinching Best Result in 30 Years

Moroccan high school students have made history at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad in Australia, achieving the country’s best result in three decades and global recognition in a competition dominated by the world’s top mathematical minds. They won two bronze medals and four honorable mentions after scoring a total of 106 points.

Yassine Kamouh and Hamza Achak are making Morocco proud. The two high school students were medalists, scoring 26 and 24 points respectively. Four other team members: Mohamed Amine Halhoule, Mohamed Wassim Aabida, Sami Massaoui, and Yasser Messaad received honorable mentions for their efforts. This is the second-best performance in Morocco’s history at this prestigious event, and the best since 1983. According to the Moroccan Association of Mathematics, these performances demonstrate "exceptional scientific excellence and a great ability to solve problems".

The joy of the laureates’ families is immeasurable. "It was an immense joy mixed with deep pride," said Hassan Halhoule, the father of one of the medalists. This result has raised the Moroccan flag among countries with far more resources and support. "These achievements are not the result of chance. "It’s not just a success, it’s the continuation of a tradition," Halhoule pointed out. And he added: "From the Almoravid era to the present day, Morocco’s identity has always been marked by a deep commitment to science, astronomy, and mathematics."

The only regret: the Moroccan team missed the opportunity to win a third medal. Student Mohamed Amine Halhoule was very close to winning it, but a dispute over the score of one of his solutions put it out of reach. Nevertheless, the Moroccan Association of Mathematics is optimistic. According to them, this is not the end, it is an effort to continue building a generation that excels in science, proudly representing Morocco in all global arenas.

For their part, the parents of the high school students are now demanding more formal support. Unlike countries like Saudi Arabia, where students are exempted from exams and trained by international experts, Moroccan students often have to juggle multiple pressures, according to Morocco World News.
