Moroccan Man Jailed for 3 Years Over Facebook Post Criticizing Mosque Closures

The Salé court sentenced a young man to a 3-year prison sentence for "praise of terrorist acts" and "failure to report a terrorist crime". The 23-year-old defendant had criticized on Facebook the closure of mosques due to Covid-19.
Accused of having criticized the government for closing mosques while cafes and restaurants remained open, the young man is also fined 5,000 DH, reports Al Oâmk Al Maghribi.
For his lawyer, Me Issam Lahlou, the judgment is too severe, as his client may have sinned by "abuse of language" but at the core he only wanted to criticize the closure of mosques, stressing that the latter has no connection with extremist organizations.
The charges against his client were not based on proven facts, he deplored, urging the court to favor education over deterrence.
