Moroccan Man in France Sentenced to 4 Years for Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault

A Moroccan residing in Mulhouse appeared before the court on charges of habitual violence, sequestration and sexual assault against his wife. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison.
The latter, a young Moroccan woman who had joined him at the end of 2021, testified to almost daily acts of violence since her arrival in France, triggered by as diverse reasons as not dressing in a djellaba or poorly performed household chores. She also reported being forced into sexual intercourse twice.
An incident related to a sequestration led to the man’s arrest in the spring of 2022, reports the newspaper l’Alsace. After being locked up for three days in their apartment, the victim managed to alert a friend through social media, who then alerted the police. The police had to force their way into the apartment to free the young woman, and the defendant was apprehended the same day.

In court, the man admitted to slapping his wife twice, but denied all other accusations, including sexual assault and sequestration. The victim, on the other hand, maintained her version, describing how she had considered jumping out the window during her sequestration. Currently in the process of divorce, she now claims to be living her life independently, working and taking French lessons.
The victim’s lawyer described the acts as part of the man’s control over his client, while the defense lawyer contested the habitual nature of the violence and pleaded for her client’s acquittal on the charges of sequestration and sexual assault. At the end of the trial, the defendant was found guilty of the three offenses and sentenced to four years in prison, two of which were suspended, with a ban on contacting the victim. He will also have to pay her 5,000 € in damages.
