Moroccan Man Arrested for Public Fast-Breaking During Ramadan, Faces Jail Time

The elements of the National Security of the city of Al Hoceima arrested a young man after being caught in the act of breaking the Ramadan fast in broad daylight on April 15. He faces up to six months in prison.
The young man’s arrest took place on the beach, reports Akhbarona. He was publicly breaking his fast and smoking on the second day of the month of Ramadan. Pending his appearance before the public prosecutor, he was placed in custody.
The young man will pay dearly for his misconduct. Article 222 of the Moroccan Penal Code punishes the public breaking of the fast during the month of Ramadan with a sentence of up to six months in prison: "Whoever, notoriously known for his belonging to the Muslim religion, ostensibly breaks the fast in a public place during the time of Ramadan, without a reason admitted by this religion, is punished with imprisonment of one to six months and a fine of 12 to 120 dirhams".
