Moroccan Man Acquitted of Murder After 21 Months in Pre-Trial Detention, Lawyer Seeks Compensation

Due to insufficient evidence and following testimonies, a man was acquitted of the charge of premeditated voluntary manslaughter, after spending 21 months in pre-trial detention in the prison of El Jadida. His lawyer plans to take legal action against the Moroccan state.

The defense of the accused has decided to sue the state in order to seek compensation for his client for the damages caused during the entire period spent in detention. A complaint will be filed with the administrative court, reports the site Kech24.

The president of the criminal chamber at the court of first instance in El Jadida had deemed the request for release, presented twice by the lawyer of the accused, inadmissible, according to the same source.

The facts date back to February 2019, when a man, savagely attacked at the entrance to Sidi Bouzid beach, had succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. According to the testimonies of the residents, on the evening of the tragedy, the victim had been seen in the company of the accused and a minor girl.
