Moroccan Lawmakers Seek to Visit Foreign Consulates in Western Sahara

A mission of Moroccan parliamentarians could visit the foreign consulates opened in [Laâyoune] and Dakhla. The wish was expressed by the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs and Moroccans Residing Abroad of the House of Representatives.
The Committee on Foreign Affairs has sent a written request to the lower house to authorize this parliamentary mission to visit these consulates. A visit that according to the committee would be meaningful and symbolic, in view of the many agitations that have been recorded in the area, after the installation of these various consulates, reports the daily [Al Ahdath Al Maghribia].
Laâyoune and [Dakhla] currently have about twenty foreign diplomatic representations. On November 4, the United Arab Emirates even inaugurated with great fanfare in Laâyoune, their consulate, thus becoming the first Arab country to have a diplomatic representation in the Moroccan Sahara. This was in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, [Nasser Bourita], and the Emirati ambassador to Rabat.
Jordan is said to be announced to also settle in the region. King Abdullah II of Jordan expressed the wish during a recent telephone interview with King [Mohammed VI], the newspaper specifies.
