Moroccan Lawmakers Question Government as Meat Prices Soar Ahead of Eid al-Adha

The record rise in red meat prices noted in recent weeks in Morocco is worrying deputies in the House of Representatives who have questioned the government on this issue during the oral question session scheduled for this Monday.

The Socialist group (opposition) is asking the government for the reasons justifying the increase in animal feed prices a few weeks before Eid al-Adha. The Haraki group, for its part, seeks to know what measures the Moroccan Executive has taken or intends to take to protect the national herd.

Similarly, the Constitutional Union group is wondering about the availability in sufficient quantity and at affordable prices of lambs for the Eid al-Adha sacrifice. In the same vein, the Istiqlal party group asks what measures the government plans to take to ensure a good celebration of the Feast of Eid El Kébir.

In response, Mustapha Baïtas, the government spokesman, mentioned the failure of the policy of subsidizing 500 dirhams per head of imported livestock granted to breeders, admitting that the kingdom "does not have large specialized importers in this field".

A few weeks before Eid al-Adha, Moroccans with limited purchasing power have their eyes turned to the government, hoping for a drop in animal feed prices before the Feast, despite the perverse effects of the severe drought that has been hitting the kingdom for several years.
