Moroccan Lawmaker's Son Sentenced to Death for Businessman's Murder

The Agadir Court of Appeal on Tuesday sentenced the son of a parliamentarian to the death penalty for "premeditated murder".

Called to testify at the October 10 hearing, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on the victim’s body, a businessman, revealed the cause of death. The young man died after being burned alive, two days after meeting the murderer who, according to the investigations carried out by the judicial police, had locked him in the trunk of his car.

The public prosecutor’s representative requested the postponement of this trial due to the hospitalization of the accused at the Inezgane (Souss-Massa) cardiovascular center, as he was leaving the Aït Melloul prison for the courthouse. But the president of the criminal chamber rejected this request, considering that the file was ready to be examined, reports Assabah.

The defendant, the son of a parliamentarian, finally appeared before the court, in a wheelchair. His defense had requested the referral of the case to the correctional chamber, on the grounds that his client was suffering from a mental illness. The president of the court declared that he had a medical report attesting to the good physical and mental health of the accused.

After a 9-month thorough investigation, the investigating judge had decided to prosecute the 27-year-old man for the murder of the victim. The trial had begun on July 22 and ended on Tuesday with his conviction to the death penalty.
