Moroccan Lawmaker Sentenced to 5 Years for Fraud and Illegal Construction

The deputy of Nador, Mohamed Aberchane, a member of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), was sentenced on Wednesday by the criminal chamber in charge of financial crimes at the Fès Court of Appeal to five years in prison and a fine of 100,000 dirhams.
The member of the House of Representatives was convicted of forgery and use of forgery (falsification of official documents), participation in the construction of a residential subdivision without prior authorization and participation in construction without a permit, reports H24info.
The first deputy mayor of the rural commune of Iaazzanene in the province of Nador, also involved in this case, was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 10,000 dirhams for complicity. The second deputy mayor of the said commune received the same sentences for the same charges.
The trial of the Nador deputy opened in May last year, after the investigating judge at the court of appeal decided to prosecute him, as well as his son and deputy mayors of the commune of Iaazzanene. Before their conviction, the accused were on provisional release after paying bail ranging from 100,000 to 250,000 dirhams.
