Moroccan Lawmaker Sentenced to 5 Years for Check Fraud, Skips Trial

The deputy of the Istiqlal party, Saleh Oughbal, has just been sentenced in absentia by the court of first instance of Sidi Slimane to a sentence of five years in prison and the payment of a fine of 250,000 dirhams. He was prosecuted for "issuing a check without provision" and "fraud".
The defendant never appeared at the hearings, indicate sources to the daily Al Akhbar, specifying that this deputy from the Khénifra electoral district, and member of the Infrastructure, Energy, Mines and Environment Commission in the House of Representatives, "presented himself to the justice of Sidi Slimane to file an appeal."
An accomplice of the Istiqlal deputy, prosecuted for "issuing a so-called guarantee check", was also sentenced to a one-year prison sentence, accompanied by a fine of 250,000 dirhams. According to the same sources, "the heavy fines imposed on the Istiqlal deputy and his accomplice show that the checks [which are] the subject of this dispute mentioned significant sums."
