Moroccan Lawmaker Raises Alarm Over Radical Rhetoric in Mosques Amid Family Code Debate

The deputy of the Democratic Left Federation party, Fatima Tamni, questioned the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, about the use of mosque pulpits to spread radical discourses against Moroccans.
"In light of the ongoing debate in society on the subject of the Family Code and the expected changes, conflicting and hostile statements have emerged from those affiliated with the Islamic current, against human rights and political actors who advocate for a modern vision that anchors the values of equality," said Fatima Tamni in a written question to Minister Ahmed Toufiq.
She added: "What is surprising in this matter is the exploitation of mosque pulpits on a religious occasion to incite against this category. These interventions, which are dominated by a takfiri and threatening tone from various conservative individuals and organizations, including political Islam organizations, in reaction to the proposals to amend the Family Code, aim to give these people an opportunity to form a broad front to block any reform that is not in line with their interpretation of religious texts."
The parliamentarian also stressed that "these statements can undoubtedly further spread extremist discourse in Morocco, knowing that some of the followers have opted for "incitement" and threats, and have even threatened civil war." The FGD member also asked what measures the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs plans to take to prevent the holding of radical discourses in mosques and prayer halls.
