Moroccan Lawmaker Proposes Decriminalizing Homosexuality and Extramarital Relations

The deputy of the Democratic Left Federation, Omar Balafrej, called for the decriminalization of extramarital relations and homosexuality, by removing Articles 489, 490 and 491 of the Penal Code that go against individual freedoms.
According to Hibapress, this amendment is part of a set of reforms to the Criminal Law Project that the deputy has submitted to the elected representatives, with a view to their validation during the next parliamentary session.
In his weekly podcast, published on Facebook, the parliamentarian said that it is necessary to remove Article 489 which stipulates: "Anyone who commits an indecent or unnatural act with an individual of the same sex shall be punished with imprisonment of 3 months to 3 years, and a fine of 200 to 1,000 dirhams."
Balafrej’s call comes a few days after the launch on social networks of the "Outlawed" campaign by activists, asking for the modification of the Code of Criminal Procedure which, according to them, hinder individual freedoms.
