Moroccan Lawmaker Jailed for Financial Crimes, Trial Set for August

A parliamentarian belonging to the political party Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has been placed in detention at the local Bourkaiz prison in Fès for financial malpractice. His trial will open on August 18.
The former mayor of a municipality in Nador is accused of fraudulent practices, reports Assabah. Three other state officials have been brought before the investigating judge, Mohamed Touileb, specialized in financial crimes at the Fez Court of Appeal. They are the third vice-president affiliated with the PJD, the 4th from the PAM and a municipal deputy. The first two were placed in detention while the third was released on bail of 30,000 DH.
On Wednesday, the four suspects appeared before the Attorney General. The charges are of several kinds: fraud and embezzlement of funds, issuance of building permits and other administrative documents related to the registration of land lots, modification of building permits without prior consultation of the commission responsible for validating the files...
These facts date back to the time of this former mayor of a municipality in Nador, the main accused. According to the investigators, the municipality recorded a shortfall of around 126 million DH.
