Moroccan Lawmaker Faces Trial for Embezzlement and Misuse of Public Funds

Prosecuted for embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds, the parliamentarian and leader of the Popular Movement (MP) Mehdi Atmoun appeared on Tuesday before the criminal chamber of the Court of Appeal of Casablanca.
At the start of the hearing, the public prosecutor recalled the charges against the accused before the court decided to postpone the trial to January 11. The deputy risks a lot in this case. The facts for which he is being prosecuted, along with 9 other people, date back to 2019. At the time, the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) had conducted an investigation based on a report from the Court of Auditors on the management of the municipality of Khourigba, reports Al Akhbar.
Serious violations committed in the financial and administrative management of the municipality were revealed by the investigation. The deputy, then president of the municipality, won several tenders worth 536,730 dirhams through a company of which he was the director. The report of the Court of Auditors also highlighted numerous financial offenses, flagrant violations of the rules regarding the awarding of contracts.
Along with him, 9 co-defendants including technicians, entrepreneurs and municipal officials are being prosecuted at large. On January 11, Mehdi Atmoun will appear with the other defendants, who risk heavy prison sentences.
