Moroccan Land Agency Targeted in Alleged 4TB Data Breach by Hacker Group

The National Agency for Land Conservation, Cadastre and Cartography (ANCFCC) was reportedly the victim of a cyberattack on Monday, claimed by a group of hackers called Jabaroot. What is the real situation?

The hacker group reported on Monday via darkforums and Telegram that they had hacked more than 4 terabytes of data (land certificates, sale and purchase deeds, information documents, bank statements, legal and administrative documents, as well as documents attributed to certain high-ranking Moroccan officials) from the Moroccan Agency, reports Médias24, specifying that they tried to contact ANCFCC to verify the information. Without success.

The media outlet recalls that the same name Jabaroot was used by the group of hackers who claimed responsibility for the cyberattack against the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) last April. These hackers identify themselves as Algerians and claim that their actions aim to "counter Moroccan propaganda" or "interference in Algerian affairs."

The same source draws attention to the timing of this group’s announcements, noting that their claim of the cyberattack against CNSS on April 9 came after the United States reaffirmed Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. This new claim comes the day after the United Kingdom’s support for Morocco’s Sahara autonomy plan, expressed on June 1.

The most plausible hypothesis is that ANCFCC’s data was hacked at the same time as that of CNSS in April. The Agency had announced the suspension of its online services on April 14 in order, it explained, to "carry out additional cybersecurity tests and deploy additional security measures."
