Moroccan Judge Jailed for Corruption in High-Profile Tangier Case

The deputy prosecutor general of the King near the Court of Appeal of Tangier, recently arrested for "abuse of power", "corruption" and "blackmail", has just been placed in detention in the Al Arjate prison in Salé.
Pending the opening of a thorough investigation in September, the accused will remain in prison. This is the decision of the investigating judge at the Rabat Court of Appeal in charge of the case, reports the daily Assabah.
The magistrate "was arrested in flagrante delicto of corruption following a call to the green number set up by the presidency of the public prosecutor’s office at the disposal of citizens to denounce blackmail and corruption," it is pointed out.
The defendant was arrested at a police checkpoint, in possession of nearly 20,000 dirhams, part of the sum he is said to have demanded to intervene in a case pending before the courts, the same sources indicate.
The deputy prosecutor tried to deny the facts. His case was dealt with according to Article 266 of the Code of Criminal Procedure indicating the procedure to be followed for officials accused of crimes or offenses "committed in the exercise or outside the exercise of their functions".
