Moroccan Journalists' Average Salary Revealed: Study Shows 10,000 Dirhams Monthly

The average monthly salary of journalists in Morocco is around 10,000 DH. This is what a statistical study carried out by the National Press Council (CNP) revealed.

Published on Wednesday on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the study indicates that 3.6% of journalists receive a salary between 3,000 DH and 4,000 DH per month, 23.4% earn between 4,000 DH and 6,000 DH, while 22.4% receive a monthly salary between 6,000 DH and 8,000 DH.

Journalists in the French-language print media earn an average of 13,432 dirhams, compared to their counterparts in the audiovisual media (SNRT, MEDI1TV and 2M) whose average monthly income is 12,958 DH, while those in the news agency press earn an average of 9,459 DH, the study found.

Journalists in the Arabic-language print media, with an average salary of 9,344 DH, are significantly less well paid than their colleagues in the French-language print media. At the bottom of the ladder are journalists working in audiovisual production companies and those in the electronic press, who receive an average monthly salary of 9,101 DH and 7,202 DH respectively.

The same study also shows that 56.3% of all journalists have less than 10 years of seniority, while 24.2% have between 10 and 20 years of seniority. Less than a quarter, or 19.5% of the entire profession, have more than 20 years of seniority.

Regarding female representation, the study shows that women represent 30% of all journalists in Morocco, explaining that this trend applies to all press professions and all Moroccan media.

In terms of age group, it was revealed that 44.15% of journalists are between 20 and 40 years old, or 1,082 journalists, while 52.15% are between 40 and 60 years old, or 1,278. Journalists over 60 years of age number 91, or 3.7% of all journalists, 83.3% of whom are men. According to the same study, the Casablanca-Settat (42.84%) and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (33.66%) regions have the highest concentrations of journalists.

Of the 3,150 journalists holding a CNP press card as of September 4, some 1,092 work in the electronic press, 915 in the audiovisual media, 584 in the print media and 239 in the news agency press. In addition to these, there are 148 honorary journalists, 107 independent journalists and 65 working in audiovisual production companies.
