The Casablanca Court of Appeal sentenced journalist Omar Radi to 6 years in prison on Monday, July 19. Bad news for human rights associations, who have constantly called for his release, denouncing a political trial. The Moroccan journalist was the subject of a double investigation into "espionage" and "rape".
In pre-trial detention for nearly a year, the journalist now knows his fate. He is sentenced to six years in prison, while his colleague and friend, Imad Stitou, was sentenced to one year in prison, including six months suspended. He was accused of "undermining the internal security of the State" and of having received "foreign funding" in connection with "intelligence services".
On Tuesday, July 6, before the judge, Omar Radi refuted the espionage charges against him. Throughout these months of detention, he has constantly rejected the accusations against him. He even began a hunger strike to protest his detention.
