Moroccan Journalist Arrested on Abortion and Morality Charges, Sparking Controversy

The journalist at the daily Akhbar Al Yaoum, Hajar Raissouni, was taken into custody by the judicial police elements on Saturday, August 31, for a dark affair of corruption, clandestine abortion and extramarital sex.
The victim, who was to be presented to the Attorney General, along with her husband, a Sudanese university professor, on Monday, September 2, was brought before the justice the same day.
Listing the charges, the investigating judge charged the journalist, her husband according to a customary marriage not yet formalized, as well as a gynecologist obstetrician with corruption and clandestine abortion. According to Alyaoum24, the accused have flatly rejected these accusations.
The 70-year-old doctor denounces this gross miscarriage of justice, declaring: "In 40 years of medicine, I have never committed an offense, and today I find myself at this age wrongly accused of an act that I did not commit."
The journalist confirmed the doctor’s statements, arguing that she had been the victim of severe bleeding requiring urgent intervention. She deplored the circumstances of her arrest, specifying: "I was belted by six plainclothes individuals in the Agdal district."
Despite the medical counter-expertise carried out by a gynecologist from the Souissi maternity hospital in Rabat, the justice system has nevertheless decided to maintain the legal proceedings against her, as well as the other prosecuted persons. Niece of Ahmed Raissouni, ideologue of the Unity and Reform Movement (MUR), matrix of the PJD, some already see it as a way for the authorities to point the finger at Moroccan Islamist figures and the contradictions of their discourse.
