Moroccan Jewish Pilgrimage Postponed Amid Coronavirus Concerns

Initially scheduled for May 11 and 12, 2020, the Hilloula of Meknes has been postponed to a later date. This is the decision of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco, during a meeting. The reasons for this postponement are simple. It is to avoid any risk of contamination by the Coronavirus, in accordance with the preventive measures taken by the Moroccan government in the fight against the pandemic.

The Hilloula is a major event that brings together Jews from around the world. This postponement decision is in line with that of the Ministry of the Interior, which prohibits mass gatherings, except for Moussems, of which the Hilloula is a part.

In addition, the Council has also prohibited visits to retirement homes whose residents are elderly people. A sensitive, fragile and very risky target in relation to the virus.

The Council has taken other preventive measures. These include the closure of schools affiliated with the Israeli league; the cancellation or postponement of cultural and religious events planned in the near future; the provision of a toll-free number for the Moroccan Jewish community for useful information on the evolution of the COVID-19 situation and the conduct to be followed, as well as the obligation for students to stay at home during this critical period. Other practical advice has been given to the Jewish community on the occasion of religious ceremonies. These include wearing medical masks and regular hand washing.

Two new cases of Coronavirus have been recorded in Marrakech and have been admitted to one of Morocco’s most technologically advanced health units. It also announces the death of the elderly woman from Italy. This is the first death caused by Coronavirus infection in Morocco.
