Moroccan Islamist Party PJD Opposes New Electoral Law After Court Ruling

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) has reaffirmed its opposition to the new electoral quotient. This new reaction follows a decision by the Constitutional Court.
The PJD definitively loses a battle. The three laws amending respectively the organic law relating to the House of Representatives, the one relating to the House of Councilors and the one relating to the election of local authorities have been validated by the Constitutional Court. The Court has thus dismissed the Islamist party.
In a statement, the Islamist party said that the adoption of the electoral quotient based on registered voters is "an undemocratic choice" and contrary to all the rules underlying the democratic choice. This new electoral quotient "undermines the elected institutions and makes them incapable of truly expressing the general will of the nation, resulting from a free and fair vote expressed through participation in the election," denounces the PJD, adding that this electoral quotient will contribute to further aggravating abstention instead of strengthening citizens’ trust in elections and elected institutions.
"The adoption of the electoral quotient based on registered voters constitutes a setback dictated by political motives aimed at capping electoral results and distributing seats equally among all," the party of Saâdeddine El Othmani also denounces, noting that this quotient undermines the competitive and political nature of elections and their role in holding political parties accountable. The PJD will also add that this quotient "will contribute to the weakening of the action of the institutions and to make them incapable of fulfilling their constitutional and legal roles and, in particular, their development function".
