Moroccan Islamist Parties Clash Over Ramadan Prayer Ban Amid Pandemic

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD) and Al Adl Wal Ihsane are at loggerheads. The reason for the disagreement: the ban on Tarawih prayers in mosques during Ramadan.
Tensions have risen between the PJD and Al Adl Wal Ihsane. The cause is the government’s decision to ban Tarawih prayers during the holy month. The lamp party is harshly criticized by the political movement which has moreover called on citizens to violate the health restrictions, in particular this measure, reports Assabah. As a result, in Tangier and Fez, citizens have trampled on this decision by performing the prayer after the ftour in recent days.
These actions have provoked strong reactions from the political party. In an editorial published on its website, the PJD denounced these actions which will lead to a worsening of the health situation in the kingdom and an increase in Covid-19 cases. The party of the head of government has sought to provide clarification on the relationship between citizens’ preventive measures and religion. It explained that the decision to close the mosques at night is fully consistent with the values of Islam, as religion attaches importance to preserving the health of Muslims.
The PJD also recalled that this decision is motivated by the recommendations of scientists who have alerted Morocco to a third wave of Covid-19 that is rapid, strong, virulent and more deadly, which is already raging in Europe and other countries in the world. Vigilance must therefore be the order of the day.
