Moroccan interns will be able to spend a year in the United Kingdom from 2027

The United Kingdom will add Erasmus+ to its work-exchange visa on 8 October. Moroccan participants selected for certain internships or placements will be able to stay for up to twelve months, as part of the mobility opportunities planned from 2027.

The British Home Office has just added Erasmus+ to the list of programmes accepted under the “Government Authorised Exchange” visa. The change will take effect on 8 October 2026, ahead of the United Kingdom’s return to the European programme in 2027.

The new scheme covers three categories: professional internships, teaching placements and training placements. The official document sets the maximum stay at twelve months and authorises placements anywhere in the United Kingdom.

Moroccans can benefit from this because Morocco is among the third countries eligible for Erasmus+, in the “Southern Mediterranean” region, according to the European Commission. However, this possibility depends on the action concerned and on the project selection.

This is therefore neither a new visa open to all young Moroccans nor a programme allowing applicants to freely seek an internship in the United Kingdom. The candidate must already be taking part in a recognised Erasmus+ mobility programme and have a placement meeting British criteria.

The text published by the Home Office designates IRARA Services Ltd as the organisation responsible for sponsorship. It will have to issue the participant with a sponsorship certificate or reference, which is essential for the visa application.

The beneficiary will not be allowed to take permanent employment. Their activity must correspond to the internship or placement mentioned in their certificate. Erasmus+ placements that do not fall into the three selected categories will have to use another immigration route.

According to the conditions currently published by the British government, applicants must generally have at least 1,270 pounds in their account for 28 consecutive days. This requirement is waived if the sponsor confirms that it will cover their initial expenses.

At the current rate, the application costs 340 pounds, plus a healthcare surcharge generally set at 1,035 pounds per year. These amounts may nevertheless be revised before the launch of the first mobility programmes in 2027.

The visa also authorises a second job for up to twenty hours per week and allows, subject to conditions, the spouse and children to join the beneficiary. However, each family member must submit a separate application and pay their own fees.
