Moroccan Interior Ministry to Sue Lawyer for Defamation Against Intelligence Agency

The Ministry of the Interior wants to prosecute lawyer Mohamed Ziane for his defamatory remarks against the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
This decision of the ministry was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Kingdom, particularly those relating to the guarantee of the rights of litigants, individuals and institutions, and in the context of the will to activate the legal requirements governing the rule of law, indicates a statement from the department of Abdelouafi Laftit.
Moreover, it is based on clear material facts, including a series of videos in which the lawyer, who is also the secretary general of the Moroccan Liberal Party (PML), attacks certain institutions, the same statement continues. The accused had published a statement in the name of the PML party to demand the dissolution of the DGST. The same document states that the accused has attacked the institutions of the State through "false accusations" and "allegations liable to criminal sanctions" after insulting public officials in the performance of their duties.
The recourse of the Ministry of the Interior to the judicial power "stems from its constitutional duty to protect and enforce the law, and to confront all offenders, whoever they may be, and from its firm commitment to protect its employees against attacks, insults and defamation that may target them in the performance of their duties," the same document specifies.
As for the complaint of the Ministry of the Interior, it will be filed with the public prosecutor’s office at the court of first instance in Rabat. Informed of the personal decision taken by the lawyer on behalf of the party, members of the PML demanded his resignation last December. They accused him of involving them in personal conflicts.
