Moroccan Interior Ministry Refutes Human Rights Activist’s Claims of State Repression

The Ministry of the Interior denied, on Wednesday, March 24, the "irresponsible statements and tendentious allegations" of Maâti Monjib, tending to make the national and international public opinion believe that Morocco is a bad student in terms of human rights.
"In a video relayed on certain websites and social networks, the one called Maâti Monjib, just after his provisional release on a judicial decision, made tendentious statements and allegations in which he attacked the institutions of the State, by evoking, in bad faith, foreign concepts and terminologies far from the reality and the nature of the work of national institutions, such as ’political police’, ’political security’ and the existence of ’a secret structure threatening the security of Moroccans’," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry denies these "irresponsible" statements which aim to tarnish Morocco’s image in terms of human rights, recalling that the institutions have always played their role as guarantors of public order and ensured the protection of persons and property, in compliance with the constitution, national laws and international conventions. "The effectiveness of the institutions is praised inside and outside Morocco, for their dedication and selflessness in the service of the homeland and citizens," it adds.
"These low maneuvers will not deter the State institutions from continuing to correctly and firmly apply the legal provisions against all those who believe they can benefit from legal immunity simply because they hold dual nationality," the statement also specified, stressing that "all Moroccans are equal before the law and are required to comply with it, without favoritism or discrimination."
