Moroccan Inmates Produce 20,000 Face Masks Daily in Prison Initiative to Combat COVID-19

Moroccan prisons will contribute to the fight against coronavirus, through the manufacture of protective masks. The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced on Tuesday the launch of a mask manufacturing project in production units within Moroccan prisons.
Male and female inmates from 21 prisons have engaged in the mask production operation, launched on May 5, with a production capacity of 20,000 masks per day, according to a DGAPR press release. The manufacture of the masks will be carried out under the supervision of several ministries and as part of the delegation and inmates’ adherence to the national effort to combat the spread of the covid-19 pandemic.
Two main objectives support this operation, details the DGAPR. The first is related to the qualification of inmates, for better integration into society and the strengthening of the spirit of citizenship, through their contribution to the efforts made by the various components of Moroccan society in the fight against the virus. The second objective is of a social nature and aims to allow inmates to manage the duration of detention during the confinement period through paid employment, the delegation said.
The DGAPR assures that the production operation is carried out in accordance with the health standards adopted at the national level, and in compliance with the conditions required by the supervisory departments. The DGAPR benefits from the support of two strategic partners in the implementation of this project. These are the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Green and Digital Economy, the press release said.
