Moroccan industry: the automotive sector is driving exports upwards

Automotive exports increased by 37.4% at the end of July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, reaching nearly 82.02 billion dirhams (MMDH), according to the Office des Changes.

This upward trend is justified by the increase in sales in all segments of the sector, indicates the Office in its latest publication of the monthly indicators of foreign trade, noting an evolution of the construction segment (+31.4% / +9.08 MMDH), wiring (+43.9% / +7.87 MMDH) and vehicle interiors and seats (+36.2% / +1.48 MMDH). Similarly, sales in the electronics and electrical sector recorded an increase of 34.6% (+3.46 MMDH) during the period, reaching 13.48 MMDH against 10.01 MMDH a year earlier.

Sales in the textile and leather sector increased by 11.5% (+2.95 MMDH), due to the increase noted in the segments of ready-made garments (+15.4%), knitwear (+5.2%) and footwear (+5.1%). As for exports in the agriculture and agri-food sector, they show a slight decline due in particular to the drop in exports of the food industry (-2.2%). The same trend is noted in the aeronautics sector (-1%). Meanwhile, sales in agriculture, forestry and hunting remain stable.

Phosphate and derivative sales were established at 40.86 MMDH during the first seven months of 2023 compared to 68.37 MMDH in the same period last year. This downward trend is explained by the drop in sales of natural and chemical fertilizers (-36.5%), phosphoric acid (-46%) and phosphates (-53%). Despite this decline, the 2023 figures (end of July) remain higher than those recorded during the same period between 2019 and 2021.
