Moroccan Imams and Muezzins Protest for Better Working Conditions Outside Parliament

Exasperated by their precarious living conditions, the imams and muezzins of Morocco organized a sit-in on Monday in front of the Parliament in Rabat. They denounce the deaf ear of the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs to their multiple grievances.

The imams and muezzins of the kingdom are demanding, among other things, a decent life, the protection of the cultural heritage of the "charter system" without the intervention of associations, the granting of housing-jobs, the right to participate in public solidarity, compensation for job loss, compensation as a right to support their children, the right to religious and national holidays, the non-organization of interviews and exams for those with a certificate of testimony (certificate of qualification), registration in social security, as well as the reintegration of people dismissed by the ministry, reports Hespress.

In addition to these grievances, the imams and muezzins deplore their low salaries, which are 400 dhs for the muezzin and 500 dhs for the imam or at most 1800 dhs (mourchid) for some of them. Not to mention that they are demanding a date to take the certificate of qualification exam every year. However, it should be noted that Article 40 of the Dahir Chérifien organizing the missions of religious officials and determining their status provides "the possibility of promoting imams holding a degree to the ranks of Mourchidine, within the limit of the budgetary positions created each year and after having passed the test organized by this department".

Although the demonstration organized by the imams is not in line with what Article 7 of the Dahir provides, the ministry will do its best to give satisfaction to the imams and muezzins on some points, in order to grant them the dignity they deserve, the same source specifies.
