Moroccan Imam Sparks Outrage After Barring Women from Mosque Prayers

Imam Abdelhakim Bensi, from the Chninat mosque in Oulad Teïma, near Taroudant, is at the center of a controversy following the circulation of a video on social media.
In this sequence, the imam addresses women attending the mosque. He criticizes their behavior, judging that it does not respect the rules of the place of worship. As a result, he asks them to no longer attend the collective prayers (Tarawih) and to pray at home.
According to the imam’s statements, his intention was to remind of the sacredness of the mosque and to value the work of the management committee. However, the video has provoked strong reactions online.
Internet users are divided. Some support the imam’s approach, while others firmly oppose it, arguing that the decision to prohibit or not access to the mosque does not fall within his authority, but within that of the responsible authorities. The phrase "It is not up to the imam to prohibit women from praying at the mosque" summarizes this position.
The delegation of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs of Taroudant has summoned Imam Bensi to explain this video. Sanctions, which could go as far as suspension, are being considered. The case is ongoing.
