Moroccan Human Rights Group Reports Sharp Decline in Press Freedom

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) once again criticizes Morocco in the field of freedom of expression. In its annual report on public freedoms, the association claims that the kingdom has experienced an "unprecedented regression" in terms of freedom of expression and the press in 2021.
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) denounced during the press conference presenting its annual report, the continuation of arrests and trials "in an authoritarian context marked by repression and restrictions".
In total, the association recorded 170 cases of legal proceedings or incarceration targeting journalists, bloggers and activists of social movements in 2021. It also deplores the ban on more than 140 demonstrations throughout the year under the pretext of the state of health emergency.
As an observer member of the UN Economic and Social Council, the AMDH calls for the cancellation of these prosecutions against journalists and other bloggers, the lifting of restrictions imposed on associations, especially the refusal to renew accreditations for those working for the defense of human rights to freely carry out their activities.
