Moroccan Human Rights Chief Praises Students for Exposing Campus Sexual Harassment

In recent months, some Moroccan universities have been tainted by cases of harassment and sexual blackmail, leading to the suspension of some and prison sentences for others. The president of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), Amina Bouayach, salutes "the courage" of the students who, through their denunciation, have allowed the authorities to touch on a phenomenon that is growing.
Speaking during a debate organized on Monday by the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University of Tangier on "the social responsibility of the University - Towards an inclusive and integrated university life", the president of the CNDH stated that the facts and acts of harassment and sexual blackmail recorded recently in universities only "harm the reputation and mission of the university". For her, "they constitute a real test for the ability of our society to assume its societal responsibilities," reports Hespress.
The president of the CNDH, while saluting the courage of the students who denounced the cases of sexual harassment within the universities, called on the others who prefer to suffer rather than denounce, to break the silence, because "one of the solutions to address this phenomenon lies essentially in the reporting of any form of gender-based violence".
During her intervention, Amina Bouayach proposed, as mechanisms to protect the students, the implementation of a "remedial measure", in order to prevent them from suspending their studies. She also called for the definition and development of a framework for controlling the relationships between teachers and students, and for the identification of anything that is likely to "incite violence, hatred, discrimination, and gender-based violence".
