Moroccan Hotels Resist COVID-19 Patient Overflow as Authorities Seek Solutions

While hospital facilities are overcrowded in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region, hotel owners have categorically refused to accommodate patients with coronavirus. Meanwhile, authorities are working to find solutions.

The Wali of the region, Mohamed Mhaidia, has requested the help of hotel owners to accommodate COVID-19 patients. Very few of them have responded positively to this request, reports Assabah. The Mogador hotel is one of the hotel establishments that has agreed to accommodate patients. The owner has made his rooms and restaurants available to medical teams, people with coronavirus and relatives or colleagues who have been in contact with them.

In Larache, solidarity is not the most shared thing in these times of health crisis. As proof, no hotelier has agreed to accommodate patients. Yet, a cluster has been declared in a fish canning factory in this city. This factory employs some 4,000 people. If nothing is done, this could constitute a real public health problem.

Faced with the situation, the deputy Zhour Ouahabi (PAM) sent a letter to the hoteliers of the city. "Human lives in destitution depend on your generosity, and cannot be isolated at home for lack of means," she wrote.

For his part, Wali Mhaidia is mobilizing all local and provincial authorities to find solutions and closely monitor the evolution of the situation. The urgency is to prevent the spread of the virus.
