Moroccan Higher Education Crisis: Half of University Students Drop Out Without Degrees

Nearly half of Moroccan students leave university without a degree. Here are the explanations of the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui.
They are precisely nearly 49.4% of students who end their university studies without obtaining a degree, indicates the minister, adding that various reasons are mentioned to explain this situation, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribiya.
In his presentation on the state of higher education in Morocco before the Commission on Education, Culture and Communication at the House of Councillors, Miraoui also stressed that 35% of all holders of a scientific or technical baccalaureate prefer to orient themselves towards the fields of economics, social sciences, literature and humanities due to the language barrier.
To justify their choice, these students argue that it is difficult to pursue their studies in French, the minister said, noting that this situation leads to difficulties in entering and integrating the job market.
Regarding the investments made in the sector, the authority stated that efforts have been made by the ministry to advance the higher education sector. "The number of approved training cycles had been increased to 3,858, including 2,812 in the public sector and 1,040 in the private sector. There are also 32,833 places in higher institutes and grandes écoles with limited access, an increase of 5% compared to the previous academic year," he detailed.
In addition, the government has opened eight new universities spread across several regions of the kingdom, including the southern regions. The amounts of scholarships for students have also been increased, going from 200 MDH to reach more than 2 BMDH during the current academic year. 408,000 students benefited from it this year, an increase of 1.5% compared to the previous academic year.
