Moroccan Hammam Workers Protest Closures, Demand Reopening and Financial Aid

The injustice has lasted long enough for the employees of the hammams in Berrechid who have been unemployed for several months and without financial compensation. They organized a sit-in at the prefecture of Berrechid to demand the reopening of their workplace and to denounce the spas that have resumed their activity.
The masseuses are angry at the local authorities, reports Al Akhbar. Not only have they not benefited from any compensation from the Solidarity Fund, but they are powerless to witness the resumption of their activities by spas (luxury baths and fitness centers), formerly beauty salons. In their demands, they argue that these spas do not comply with the safety measures enacted to counter the coronavirus despite the influx observed in these establishments.
Unemployed for several months, some women are forced to beg to feed their families. Faced with this precarious situation, they plead for the reopening of their establishments while promising to respect the rules in force. They have also threatened to toughen their protest movement in the absence of concrete solutions.
Alerted, the local authorities set up a commission which organized a tour of the city and proceeded to close these spas that had replaced the beauty salons after the closure of the traditional baths.
Aware of the precariousness in which these ladies live, Internet users have called on the local authorities to reopen the traditional baths as in neighboring cities such as Settat, Bir Jdid, Khouribga and Ben Ahmed.
