Moroccan Gynecologist Jailed After Pregnant Woman’s Death Sparks Investigation

A gynecologist and a midwife have been detained for, through negligence and refusal of assistance, causing the death of a pregnant woman and her fetus. The tragedy occurred at the Larache hospital. The public prosecutor’s office also decided to prosecute three other doctors, as well as the wife of the detained gynecologist, for issuing and obtaining certificates of convenience.
The two detainees, the doctor and the midwife, are being prosecuted for "refusal of assistance and endangerment of a pregnant woman, involuntary manslaughter by negligence, discrimination, corruption, physical and psychological violence".
According to Le360, during the first hearing, the gynecologist told the Deputy Prosecutor of the King that if he had not taken care of the victim, it was because he was not informed of her critical condition.
A justification refuted by the midwife who claimed to have duly informed him of this emergency but that he had refused to intervene. However, she acknowledged having received 300 dirhams in bribery from the victim’s family.
A second midwife was prosecuted, but she was able to benefit from provisional release after posting a 10,000 dirham bail.
The lawyer for the doctor and the first midwife, after an 18-hour hearing, asked for the release of his clients. But the Court rejected it, citing serious medical negligence.
Pending the second hearing scheduled for October 7 to rule on this case, the accused are being held in the local prison in Larache.
