Moroccan Gas Stations Urge Crackdown as Fuel Black Market Surges
The black fuel market reigns supreme in Morocco to the point of worrying the owners of service stations. Faced with anti-competitive practices, they call on the Ministry of Energy to activate the implementing decrees of the Hydrocarbons Act to put an end to this situation.
Despite repeated warnings from the Competition Council against these anti-competitive practices due to the high profit margins of distribution companies, the black market is growing more and more in the Kingdom.
In a press release, the National Federation of Owners, Merchants and Managers of Service Stations (FNPCGSM) indicated that outside the regulated distribution channels, nearly 50% of the fuel consumed on the local market comes from the black market.
For the station owners, some companies supply fuel to intermediaries at prices lower than those charged to service stations. These in turn are responsible for making them available to certain transport professionals and some clandestine warehouses, in defiance of the rules of competition.
