Moroccan MP Fined and Given Suspended Sentence for Insulting Colleague

Abdelouahed Messaoudi, MP and president of the municipal council of Tangier under the aegis of the PAM, was sanctioned by the justice system. Convicted by the court of first instance of Taza, he was sentenced to two months in prison with a suspended sentence, as well as a fine of 2,000 dirhams.
Messaoudi found himself in the sights of justice following accusations of defamation and public insult against his Istiqlal colleague, Mounir Chentir. Chentir, offended during a session of the municipal council, filed a complaint with the public prosecutor’s office in Rabat.
According to the statements of Chentir relayed by Al Akhbar, following his opposition to the subsidy dedicated to student transportation, Messaoudi would have lost his temper, shouting and hitting the table. He would also have uttered public insults towards his colleague, going so far as to threaten him in public.
This scene took place in the presence of the authorities, municipal councilors and citizens present at this session. Despite these provocations, Chentir claims to have remained calm, with the intention of preserving the reputation of the municipal council.
